The tenth edition of the Indian Premier League has come to a dramatic end, with the title being decided off the very last ball of the tournament on a hot and humid Hyderabad night in the middle of a typical Indian summer. Next year, the tournament will enter a new decade. Despite the occasional controversies surrounding it, the IPL has proved that it is the most popular cricket league around the world.
Many would have thought this edition would see a new champion, with Rising Pune Supergiant looking in awesome form leading up to the knockouts. However, there is something about the atmosphere surrounding Mumbai cricket. The franchise based in the city of the 41-time Ranji Trophy champions are now three-time IPL champions as well, the most by any team.
Last year’s runners-up Royal Challengers Bangalore struggled throughout the duration of the tournament, despite having the big match-winners, while defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad once again made it to the last four, losing out in the Eliminator.
This edition had its share of big team totals and there were five centuries, with Hashim Amla alone making two of those. Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Rahul Tripathi and Washington Sundar were some of the Indian youngsters that made a mark.
The one-run win for Mumbai Indians on Sunday (May 21) was the closest finish to an IPL final — the 2009 and 2016 finals had been won by Deccan Chargers and Sunrisers Hyderabad by six and eight runs respectively. Mumbai, meanwhile, became the only second side in IPL history to win the title after finishing first in the league table. Rajasthan Royals had achieved the feat in the inaugural season in 2008.
Over the past 46 days, 59 matches – one game was washed out without a ball being bowler — were played in 10 cities and grounds across the country. The competition threw up several interesting numbers. Some of the significant ones are listed below.
