Graeme Smith’s decision to retire from the international game at the age of 33 might have surprised some, but considering the burden he has had to shoulder since taking charge as South Africa captain in 2003, it was probably the right decision.

That, however, doesn’t discount the fact that South African cricket must now go through a period of transition, Smith’s departure coming on the heels of Mark Boucher and Jacques Kallis walking away. A new captain must also be identified, and AB de Villiers may or may not be able to put on yet another hat given all that he has to do already.

Neil Manthorp, the senior South African journalist, joins Wisden India’s Dileep Premachandran and Shamya Dasgupta to discuss Smith’s place in history, his impact on South African cricket, and more.
