Leon Johnson has been appointed captain of the WICB President’s XI for the two-day tour match against India to be played at Warner Park in Basseterre from Saturday (July 9). Johnson has played four Test matches for West Indies scoring 275 runs at 39.28.

Johnson, who was dropped from the side after the South Africa series in January 2015, has pushed his way back into contention after scoring 807 runs at an average of 57 at the first-class level.

The West Indies Cricket Board selection panel on Monday announced a 12-member squad, Johnson leading a side that includes Jermaine Blackwood, Shai Hope, Shane Dowrich, Jomel Warrican and Rajendra Chandrika, who all have already represented West Indies in Tests.

Vishaul Singh and Roston Chase have been selected on the basis of some displays at the first-class level. Vishaul made 712 runs at an average of 50 whereas Chase amassed 710 runs at 59.

India will be touring West Indies for four Test matches, the first of which start at the Viv Richards Cricket Ground in St John’s on July 21. Prior to that, the Indians will play two practice matches against WICB President’s XI, the second of those also ar Warner Park a three-day affair beginning on July 14. The last time India visited the West Indies was in June 2011 for a three-Test series, which Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s side won 1-0.

The Indian team will depart for their seven-week tour in the early hours of Wednesday from Mumbai.
