Champaka Ramanayake was named Sri Lanka’s new fast bowling coach on Monday (May 11). He will take charge of the side from June 1 and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said his initial contract is for the three home series against Pakistan, India and West Indies.
Ramanayake, who was the bowling coach for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2014 Indian Premier League, replaces Chaminda Vaas, with the left-arm seamer deciding not to seek an extension of his contract with SLC, which ended on April 30. Vaas himself had taken over the reins from Ramanayake in February 2013.
Ramanayake had given up on the coaching role with Sri Lanka after his wife, Nilanthi Jayaseker, was diagnosed with cancer. She passed away in June 2014.
Ramanayake, 50, played 18 Tests and 62 One-Day Internationals and bagged 112 international wickets across both formats from 1988 to 1995. He will assist Marvan Atapattu, Sri Lanka’ current head coach.
