    Profile

Jonny Bairstow is one of the most exciting talents to make the England team in recent years. His Flintoff-like ability to butcher quality bowling and strike the ball cleanly over the rope offers a mouth-watering potential to England’s middle-order, with Matt Prior below him and Kevin Pietersen a couple of positions above him. The son of David, former England and Yorkshire wicketkeeper who tragically took his own life in 1998, is also a keeper though he would comfortably hold his place as a batsman alone should he deliver on what he gave as a glimpse of his skills against India last year. An innings of 41 from just 21 balls on his international debut helped give England a victory but more, demonstrated a coolness of character and exquisite ball-striking talent. While he may earn a fortune from the IPL in years to come, for now, he just needs to establish himself in the Test team as the chance has presented itself maybe sooner than he might have hoped. He was at Leeds United’s football academy and could have played professional rugby, but having chosen his path, it is time to show – emphatically – that he made the right call.
