PROFILE

A canny left-arm spinner and hard-hitting lower-order batsman, Ravindra Jadeja thrust himself into the national reckoning when he scored 739 runs and picked up 42 wickets in the 2008-09 Ranji season. He further publicised his natural ability when he rattled off 314 – the highest by a Saurashtra batsman in first-class cricket – against Odisha in 2011-12. Jadeja's IPL career took off with a bang at the Rajasthan Royals in 2008, where he was dubbed “The Rockstar” by skipper Shane Warne. However, he was forced to sit out the third season after being banned for one year by the Governing Council for attempting to negotiate a higher contract in breach of IPL rules. He returned with the Kochi Tuskers in 2011, and when the franchise was disbanded the Chennai Super Kings snapped him up for a whopping $US2 million – the entire purse available to the team in the 2012 auction. In the shorter versions, Jadeja is especially dangerous, where his ability to hit cleanly down the ground when required make him an asset. Add a good throwing-arm and safe hands and the entire package has earned him the trust of MS Dhoni both in the Indian and Super Kings dressing room. A key cog in the limited-overs side for a while now, Jadeja’s put up a memorable Test performance in the 2013 home series against Australia when he picked up 24 wickets at an average of 17.45, as India completed a rare 4-0 whitewash.
