    Profile

Test cricket’s youngest wicket-keeper at 17 years and 153 days, Parthiv Patel was called up as an injury replacement for Ajay Ratra in the second Test against England in 2002 at Trent Bridge. He put his duck in the first innings behind him and stood his ground for over an hour to compile a gritty 19 in the second that saved India from certain defeat. With Rahul Dravid doubling up as a wicket-keeper in the one-day format, Patel’s selection to the 2003 World Cup squad was essentially a back-up plan. After the World Cup, he wasn’t able to capitalise on the opportunities that came his way, performing inconsistently with the bat and worse, just as inconsistently behind the stumps. He was eventually replaced by Dinesh Karthik in the fourth Test in Mumbai after India succumbed to two mammoth losses to Australia in 2004. The rise of MS Dhoni further diminished his chances of a comeback to the national side. On the back of four centuries with India ‘A’ during the 2007 season, Patel found himself recalled to the squad as Karthik’s understudy for the Test series against Sri Lanka in 2008 once Dhoni opted for a break but a below-par effort in both innings of the third Test didn’t quite help his cause. He still remains in contention in the shorter formats after impressing in the IPL for the Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings, and then with Kochi Tuskers Kerala. Before the start of IPL V, he was snapped up by Deccan Chargers.
