The usual pre-requisite to receiving a Test cap is a stream of performances at the first-class level, but for Jaydev Unadkat, nine first-class games were enough to earn him a place in the playing eleven for India. The call up came during India’s tour of South Africa in 2010-11, with the-then No. 1 ranked India taking on the No. 2 ranked South Africa in their own den. Unadkat’s impressive bowling at the Under-19 World Cup in 2010 that included a lion-hearted effort against Pakistan in the quarterfinals, coupled with lavish praise from Pakistan legend Wasim Akram, had already gotten him on the fringes of the national team. He tipped the scales towards eventual selection further with a dream first-class debut, taking 13 wickets for India A against West Indies A at Leicester in June 2010. He had the opportunity of working closely with Akram when he was picked by Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2010, for whom Akram was the bowling coach. Unadkat was described as “one to watch out for” by Akram. Akram was impressed enough that Kolkata bid for him again at the 2011 auctions, getting him for $US250,000. His Test debut wasn’t as successful, however, and he was carted for runs in an innings defeat for India. The baptism by fire helped in reinforcing the fact that there was no room for errors at the highest level, which was well absorbed by Unadkat.
