Group D: Bengal on top after Raman century
Gony and Chaudhary keep Punjab in front against Chhattisgarh, Fazal’s unbeaten ton makes Services bowlers toil
Few players have used the IPL as a ladder to climb to the top of the game as efficiently as Manpreet Gony. A strongly built mediumpacer from Punjab, Gony was barely a regular at his state team when he was pitchforked into the limelight by the Chennai Super Kings in the opening edition of the IPL in 2008. Hitting the deck hard and occasionally getting the ball to hurry into the batsmen, Gony was used smartly by MS Dhoni and soon came into the national reckoning. An ODI debut against Hong Kong and a subsequent match against Bangladesh in the same tournament – the Asia Cup in Pakistan in June 2008 – followed, but Gony slipped swiftly back into cricketing oblivion. Unable to live up to his early promise, Gony was released by the Super Kings and was signed up by the Deccan Chargers in 2011.
