    Profile

It is not without reason that Dinesh Chandimal is being billed as the next big thing in Sri Lankan cricket. A reliable batsman and a safe pair of hands behind the stumps, stability was once a luxury he could ill afford. Scarce financial resources assured cricket remain a far-fetched dream, the 2004 tsunami claimed his brother, and his efforts to enroll in the under-13 squad as an off-spinner were nipped in the bud with his bowling action deemed unacceptable. Life had thrown down the gauntlet but he didn't shy away, taking up the gloves and focusing on batting. A successful under-15 tournament helped him find a place in Colombo's Ananda College cricket team. His batting exploits caught the eye of Kumar Sangakkara who encouraged him to join the Nondescripts Cricket Club. A maiden first-class century against New Zealand in a three-day practice game in 2009 earned him a call-up to the national squad for the 2010 World Twenty20. His performance lent credence that he was ready for the fifty-over format and he was selected for the tri-series in Zimbabwe, justifying the faith with a maiden ODI century that knocked India out. Although he wasn't selected for the 2011 World Cup, as the second-highest run-getter for his team in the 2012 CB tri-series in Australia, he is presenting a compelling case to be included in the 2015 World Cup.
