  Commentary

  • That's it from us here! Do join us for the second T20I at Rajkot. Until then!

  • Shikhar Dhawan (MoM): It was a good start for us. I wanted to do well for India whichever is the format. And I am happy with the effort. All three formats are very important for me. I love all three formats . I've got the belief that I can perform and I make sure my and fitness are in place so I can compete with 25-year olds.

  • Virat Kohli: It has been a clinical performance from us. Hardik's catch has been the best I have seen in a long long time. But it's been a good game, with the guys at the top giving us a chance to go out and express ourselves at the end. And the bowling was disciplined it. Dhawan wanted to get some runs and it was a good innings from him, given the form he's in the ODI's. About Ashish Nehra, he's been there and has asked the job to be done of him perfectly. We miss him in the dressing room and his fitness and to play for 19 years as a fast bowler is brilliant.

  • Player of the match - Shikhar Dhawan

  • Kane Williamson: A disappointing performance from. One that stands out is the fielding. We were very poor there. I don't think we can use the ground conditions as an excuse.India were superb and played better. When you're chasing a total like that, you do need to take risks. It was disappointing but we will be back in Rajkot. I would like to congratulate Ashish Nehra on a fabulous career. Always a gentleman.

  • Ashish Nehra: I will miss all this. That's what you train for. Like I said earlier, one thing that will be in peace is my body. I must be one bowler who bowled the most number of last overs for India, but it was different sort of pressure and today was much more comfortable. Virat was on my case for the last 2-3 overs and I said I will bowl the last over. It is a big change and I have seen 18-19 years of cricket, I played my first game here in 1997 and there have been drastic changes. The rules have been changed and so many runs being scored. This is an amazing team and Indian cricket is in good hands for next 7-8 years. Every 10 years game changes and I don't like to compare generations. Earlier we had superb players, Ganguly, MS or Sachin, I can't name everybody. All in all it has been a great journey.

  • All's well that ends well for India! They have managed to beat the Kiwis by 53 runs after a string of T20 losses. And now a lap of honour for the home boy! Everything going right for Nehra! Everything right for India! If it was Rohit-Dhawan who set the platform, Kohli's cameo helped India on a flourish! Back with the ball, a disciplined effort from the bowlers and the fielders meant India go 1-0 in the three-match T20I series.

  • Spin for New Zealand to start with.

  • And for the sound bite from Virat Kohli: We would have looked to bowl first as well. Whichever team bowls well will win this one. Ashish Nehra gets a game, he's been a great servant of Indian cricket and to go on playing for 18 years is a remarkable achievement. Shreyas Iyer makes his debut. So we have a batsman short and a bowler more, so that's a risk we'll have to take.

  • Alrighty then, Kiwis have won the toss and have opted to bowl first. Here's what Kane Williamson has to say: "There's a bit of dew on the surface, and there looks to be more in the second innings as well. So we have to take over from here.

  • New Zealand Won the Toss & Elected to Field

  • Visuals on TV shows Shreyas Iyer getting his cap, so that's one more member confirmed in the playing XI. But who's going to sit out?

  • The perfect platform for the sentimental Nehra farewell

Opinion is divided on whether veteran pacer should have been accorded this luxury a 20 over game softens the blow massively

  • And while we wait for the toss, do have a look about Ashish Nehra's finest moments. For that, we bring some fine reads by R Kaushik and Saurabh Somani.

  • Nehras last waltz and the fadeaway of the Class of the 90s

Even as their ilk rapidly goes out of circulation Gayle Herath amp Co keep the flag of the previous millennium flying

  • In focus will be Ashish Nehra, who is all set to bring the curtains down on his cricketing career – after 18 years of international cricket, 12 surgeries and numerous comebacks – in front of family and friends at his home ground. Before the on-field action, let's take some time-out and trace Nehra's journey in Indian colours. After his international debut in 1999 under Mohammad Azharuddin’s captaincy in a Test match against Sri Lanka at Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, the 38-year-old represented the country in 17 Tests, 120 One-Day Internationals and 26 T20Is. He has picked 44 Test wickets, along with 157 ODI and 34 T20I wickets. He found great success in ODIs during the course of what was an injury-plagued career, and will be best remembered for his spell of 6 for 23 against England in the 2003 World Cup, a match he played despite being unwell. He was also a part of the 2011 World Cup-winning squad and put in a match-turning performance in the semifinal against Pakistan with returns of 2 for 33. He, however, missed the final against Sri Lanka after fracturing his finger, and hasn’t played an ODI since. Now then, about the match itself. While Virat Kohli’s men did come out on top in a thriller in Kanpur to register a nail-biting six-run victory to clinch the One-Day International series 2-1, but when it comes to T20Is, India are yet to get the better of New Zealand, the No. 1-ranked side in the format. They have won five of their six games against India to date, with one (in Visakhapatnam, 2012) called off due to rain. Of the seven T20Is India have played in 2017, they have won four and lost three, the last one against Australia in Guwahati in early October. Despite all that, though, India should go into this series as the favourites, with most of the players having featured in the ODI series win bar the two newbies – the uncapped duo of Shreyas Iyer and Mohammed Siraj – and KL Rahul, who was dropped from the ODIs after a poor run in the limited-overs series in Sri Lanka. And for the stats part, Kohli needs 36 more runs to become the first Indian and eighth overall to complete 7000 T20 runs while for New Zealand, Martin Guptill, who is 55 short of becoming the seventh New Zealand player with 10,000 international runs, will be instrumental to New Zealand’s chances of posting a big total. The series will be extremely vital for Ross Taylor, a late addition to the squad. Taylor hasn’t featured in the T20I XI since New Zealand’s defeat to England in the semifinals of the World T20 2016. Since 2013, he has scored just one 50-plus score (62 against South Africa in 2014) in 26 matches and a failure here could make Taylor’s future in the format tricky. The visitors will also back Tom Latham, Colin de Grandhomme and Henry Nicholls to do the dirty work in the later stages of the innings. Latham, in particular, was in excellent form in the ODIs as he scored 206 runs in three games, including a half-century and an unbeaten century. And Kane Williamson, the captain, will be expected to hold the innings together, while the big hitters look to bat around him.

  • Good evening and welcome to the first Twenty20 International between India and New Zealand at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi.

  Full commentary
