What Suranga Lakmal started, the Sri Lankan batsmen finished in style, making light work of a 113-run target with seven wickets in hand and almost 30 overs to spare in the first One-Day International against India in Dharamsala on Sunday (December 10).
Sri Lanka thus ended a 12-match losing streak in ODI cricket. Lakmal was the wrecker-in-chief, returning outstanding figures of 4 for 13 as India were bundled out for 112 on being put in by Thisara Perera.
The Indian batting fell apart against quality seam bowling in favourable conditions. After slipping to 29 for 7, if India managed total humiliation, it was thanks to a typically defiant 65 by Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
The Indian bowlers picked up two early wickets but Upul Tharanga’s 49 ensured that there would be no further hiccups. Angelo Mathews (25) and Niroshan Dickwella (26) finished the chase expertly.
