Ben Stokes has been named in the England One-Day International squad for the series against Australia. Calling it a potential distraction, Trevor Bayliss, the England coach, said, “Whenever he comes back that’s going to be a bit of a circus for sure.”

Stokes did not travel to Australia with the rest of the squad for the Ashes but could return mid-series if the police decide to not charge him for an alleged brawl outside a nightclub in Bristol.

“Both Alex Hales and Ben Stokes are included, though their involvement remains subject to any relevant legal or disciplinary developments in relation to the incident in Bristol in September,” said an England and Wales Cricket Board statement.

Signing up for Canterbury as their overseas player was the first sign of Stokes returning to the game. Hales, who has not played any professional cricket since the incident, learned this week that he would face no criminal charges, opening the door for his selection.
